2024 Fantasy Outlook
Garoppolo signed with the Rams in March to back up Matthew Stafford after a one-year stint in Las Vegas that saw him benched by Week 9. He actually threw the ball downfield more than usual last season (six-year high 8.1 average target depth), but it didn’t result in much good. At the time of his benching, Garoppolo led the league in interceptions and his 65.1 completion percentage was a career low with a minimum 90 attempts. If he gets on the field this year, he’ll likely revert to his usual game-manager role with little downfield passing and no rushing upside to speak of. While wideouts Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are skilled after the catch, it doesn’t leave much room for Garoppolo to make a fantasy impact, even in two-QB leagues. Garoppolo, who turns 33 in November, also is suspended the first two games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Read Past Outlooks

Finds new home in L.A.
The Rams and Garoppolo (suspension) agreed to a one-year contract Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo didn't exactly uphold the three-year contract he signed with the Raiders last March, appearing in just seven games due to injury and an eventual benching for rookie QB Aidan O'Connell after Week 8. Overall, Garoppolo completed 110 of 169 passes (65.1 percent) for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in his stint with the silver and black. The current offseason has included a two-game suspension because of a violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, but Garoppolo figures to serve as Matthew Stafford's backup Week 3 and beyond in the coming campaign once the former completes the ban.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set to back up Stafford
Garoppolo, who was just released by the Raiders on Wednesday, is signing a one-year deal with the Rams to serve as Matthew Stafford's backup, ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran signal-caller will still have to sit out the first two games of the 2024 season due to a violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, but his status following that brief ban is now confirmed. Garoppolo is presumably a slight upgrade on Carson Wentz, the No. 2 quarterback the Rams ended the 2023 season with. That said, Garoppolo's play in Las Vegas, which was shaky enough for him to get benched for rookie Aidan O'Connell, does cast doubt over how effective he'd be if forced to fill in for Stafford.

Garoppolo began last season as the backup to Trey Lance in San Francisco only to take over in Week 2 when Lance suffered a season-ending injury. The same fate hit Garoppolo a couple months later when a foot injury in Week 13 ended his season. In between, he was the same Jimmy G we’ve come to expect -- a high completion percentage (5th) thanks to a lot of short passes (2nd) and few deep shots (26th), with an average target depth of 7.1 yards (27th). The Raiders guaranteed $34 million for that skill set and reunited the game manager with coach Josh McDaniels, for whom he played in New England from 2014-16. Garoppolo at least has Davante Adams to target, and the Raiders also signed WR Jakobi Meyers, who had 804 yards and six touchdowns in New England last year. Hunter Renfrow is still around as the slot guy, while the team signed TE Austin Hooper and drafted TE Michael Mayer in Round 2 after trading Darren Waller to the Giants. It's a decent supporting cast, but the Raiders also want to run the ball with Josh Jacobs, and Garoppolo won't add rushing stats of his own (225 career yards, seven TDs). There are better QB2 options.

Loses hold of starting gig
Garoppolo has been demoted from the starting quarterback role, with Las Vegas interim head coach Antonio Pierce announcing Wednesday that Aidan O'Connell will serve as the team's new top signal-caller beginning with Sunday's game against the Giants, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports. "We just feel like he gives us the best chance," Pierce said of O'Connell.
